The young carers service has been busy linking in with
Arts and Cultural services in RCT to work on providing
young people accessing the service with a wide range of
taster sessions of the arts, these include, break dancing,
photography, film making and much more. The aim of the
sessions is to give young people a taste of the activity in
the hope that they will continue to access the sessions
within their communities and it can be more sustainable
hobby for those who enjoy!
2014 is going to be getting off to a busy start for young
carers…..We have health and wellbeing sessions starting
in January that will aim to support young carers with
their emotional health through the medium of drama. We
will aim to explore and express feelings about anxiety,
lack of confidence, stress and depression. We will look at
the ways of coping with these feelings and looking at
alternative coping strategies. Parts of the sessions will also
involve looking at the effects of caring for someone with
mental health issues. In February the young carers will be
taking part in a residential that will entail working on a
drama for a DVD about young carers experiences of
children services and social workers. The project is
funded by the Care Council InWales with the intent to
show the ‘social workers of tomorrow’ young carers
issues and aims to be a training tool to let them know
what young carers needs are and the support they want.
It will aim to encompass the experiences of young carers
to better inform the new workers. We will be doing our
drama at Swansea Met and staying in a bunkhouse on
the Gower!
In March the young carers service are organising a ‘Get
Your Voice Heard Day’ which will be an event open to all
young carers and focus on fun ways of getting young
carers opinions and views heard on topics such as school,
social opportunities, training and support to inform the
development of the next carers strategy. Our plan for the
consultation event is to arrange a number of workshops
using different mediums to engage the young carers such
as drama, art, dance, media and digital stories that the
young carers can then rotate around during the day,
making sure we hear as many voices and opinions as
possible. We want the young carers to focus on what’s
important to them and so they have a massive part in
detailing how they want their service run! Look forward
to reporting back about all our events.
Rachel Spry has left to go on maternity so Carly will be
standing in while she is away. The team wishes her all the
best!
