Cwm Taf Carers A-Z Guide
Carers Entitlements, Benefits and Support
Legislation
passed in the last 25
years gives Carers specific rights and
entitlements which include:
• to be informed of your rights
verbally and in writing
• to decide how much care you wish
to provide
• to be involved in the assessment of
needs of the person for whom you
care (unless the person cared for is
over 18 and doesn’t want that)
• to have your own needs assessed
(including from the point of view of
your leisure, education and
employment) to ensure that you are
able to continue caring at the level
you intend to provide
• to have someone present to
support you at meetings or
assessments. This could be a
friend, relative, or advocacy worker,
for example.
• to use Direct Payments for the
delivery of relevant services (where
eligible)
• to be involved in hospital
discharge planning
• to request a reasonable amount of
unpaid time off from work to
arrange care, provide care or for
other reasons related to caring
• to request flexible working
arrangements as parent Carers with
children under 18 who have
worked for their employer for 26
weeks or more
• to apply for similar arrangements if
you’re looking after someone at
home
• to have respite care provided for
families with a disabled child.
